Kharian food guide: what to order at Jerry's

Kharian is a busy city. It sits on the GT Road (N-5) in Gujrat District, it is home to one of the largest cantonments in Pakistan, and it is known as the "Little Norway" of Pakistan because so many Pakistanis in Norway trace their roots to this area. With that many people coming and going, good fast food is never a bad idea. This Kharian food guide focuses on one place we know very well, Jerry's at Mall of Kharian, and helps you work out what to order.

A little about Kharian

Kharian is a city and tehsil headquarters in north-central Punjab, at the foothills of the Sub-Himalayan range. The 2023 census counted a little over 100,000 people living in the city itself, and the wider area includes Kharian Cantonment, Lalamusa, Guliana and many villages. The GT Road runs through it, linking it to Lalamusa and Gujrat on one side and to Sarai Alamgir and Jhelum on the other.

It is also an easy place to reach. Travel guides put the drive from Islamabad along the GT Road at around two and a half hours, and from Lahore at around three, traffic allowing. Plenty of families also drop into Kharian on the way to somewhere else, which is why a quick, reliable meal matters so much here. Whether you have lived here for years or are passing through for the first time, it helps to know where to go when hunger hits.

Something different: lavashak

Most fast food menus stop at burgers and fries. Ours has lavashak, the Persian-style fruit leather made by cooking down fruits such as sour plum, apricot or pomegranate and drying thin sheets. In Pakistan it has become popular served with tangy tamarind sauce, and that is how we serve it: with imli sauce, in small or large sizes, with extra imli sauce available.
