The GT Road through Kharian

The Grand Trunk Road, known in Pakistan as the N-5, is one of the oldest and busiest routes in the region. In this part of Punjab it runs straight through Kharian, linking it with Lalamusa and Gujrat to the south-east and Sarai Alamgir and Jhelum to the north-west. Kharian sits roughly midway between Lahore and Islamabad, so a lot of long-distance traffic passes through town every day.

The road is not only for travellers, though. Families from Kharian city and Kharian Cantonment use it for school runs, office trips and errands, and people from towns off the main road, such as Guliana, Dinga, Kotla Arab Ali Khan and Mandi Bahauddin, drive into Kharian and join the GT Road to get where they are going. All of that means steady traffic from the afternoon well into the evening.
